Come on, guys, the pokemon he gives up he actually has good reasons for.
Butterfree would be better off without him. Pidgeot was needed to protect some Pidgey from a jerkass Fearow. Charizard and Primeape could get better training from people other than himself. Lapras was better off with its... herd?... of other Lapras. Squirtle was needed to lead the other Squirtle in the fire department. I think he still technically owns all of his other pokemon and they've just been permanently Oaked.
As for his hat, yes, there's no excuse.
