It seems to be the hipster thing these days to complain about hotkeys. Can someone explain this to me, because I don't get this at all.

You get inundated with skills in a lot of MMOs. Nearly every skill has use in some situation and clicking skills is slow, inefficient, and unfun, thusly you bind them to keys. However, the amount of binds that are necessary gets in the way. As a Rogue in WoW, I had almost 40 binds for various skills and macros. `. 1-7, F1-5 R, T, F, G, V, B, H, T, Y, middle mouse, as well as an additional 16 from using shift as a modifier for all the aforementioned numbers and letters. This barely managed to cover all my skills, even with re-using binds for skills that only are usable by certain specs. And that was as a class without the necessity to control a pet and the pet macros that went along with that, along with the relative lack of necessity in terms of special macros for crowd control. Playing as a competitive PvP Hunter/Warlock means over 50 macros easy, sometimes over 60-even if you aren't one of those people that feels the need to make a macro and bind for using pet sacrifice on each individual person on your team. It takes a long time to learn all the binds, and often requires keyboards or mice with extra buttons. It's especially bad for people with smaller hands-many can't reach as far as 7 or F5, not to mention a lot of other keys if you try and use control as a modifier with them.

TL;DR: In MMOs, you get a s***ton of skills and they need to be bound if you're going to be any good. However, there are way too many god damn skills for a reasonable person to bind.

Oh, I knew what hotkeys were; I just didn't understand the complaints about them. Probably because I literally never saw anything that was more descriptive than "lol hotkeys are bad." It seemed like people were complaining about their very existence which was confusing. But if it's hotkey overload that people that people are complaining about... yeah I can definitely understand that.
