Nah, most people want a middle ground. Maps where the path you're supposed to go is clear, with some short branches off in other directions where you can find rare treasure/hidden bosses/whatever. That first map is too extreme, like Square is going "Fine, you want stupid exploration? Here, have some stupid exploration! Stupid!"
In all seriousness though, if maps like that first map aren't a frequent occurence, it's fine.
