I tend to like to explore along the way, not at the end if the game! SoA was a good time, but holy crap those battles.
You can! White Map is available relatively early on in Legends, one of the best changes they made from the Dreamcast version!

Don't forget about the fact that FFXIII is critically missing those incredibly meaningful repeating conversations with random, nameless characters who walk in the same pattern for the entire game.
