I didn't play it until I was 23 and it was junk. It had a shallow story, a bunch of immature stuff like "Smell you later!" and the designs are aimed at kids by being cute. I don't see how any adult playing it for the first time could like it.
I was in university in 1998, and I liked pokemon quite a bit, as did several university friends, some of whom were older than myself.
What year did you play it? Because this might just be a case of "I played this game ten years after it came out and I think it sucks." See, for instance, Ulti with Super Metroid (his first playthrough) or me with HL2.
I mean, you complain about "Smell ya later", but it's a big step up from "I've baked a cake for you."
