If we're taking everything into consideration, Cloud and Sephy are playable in both Dissidia games and both have roles in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Cloud is also a summon in Chain of Memories. Not that this competes with Pokemon's crapload of additional media, but it's enough to give them a boost as opposed to NOTHING over 14 years.
I'd say that 90-95% of Cloud's and Seph's character strength is still derived from FFVII. There's only been one FFVII for fourteen years. Which isn't even remotely comparable to other franchises (such as Zelda/Mario/etc.) that gets anywhere from 1-3 games per generation. On top of that even though Cloud/Seph gets in a few meaningless cameo's here an there, the same is true for all our other noble characters in this contest. So it's not like cloud/seph has a 1-up in that department. It is amazing these two characters are still as relevant as they are having only an outdated game and a non-mainstream cgi film that focused on them specifically.
