Would anyone take Big Boss/The Boss over, I don't know, Mario/That Alien Guy in Super Mario Land? I wouldn't.
Now consider that Samus is almost as strong as Mario and while Ridley may not be Bowser, he's no That Alien Guy From Super Mario Land either.
