Not true. The one level that matched DKC1/2s level of quality was 7-1, the first factory level. Brilliant level. Used the new and unique DKCR technologies and style to its advantage, non-Diddy platforming wasn't ass, beautiful graphics. Why couldn't the entire game be that good? Or at least more than just one level?

Anyways, the problem with the controls isn't just the motion controls... SMG had waggle and it was perfectly fine. It was just unfair most of the time. Back when I played it a year ago I had more concrete examples, but in general, playing with Diddy is so incredibly easier than without. That is not good design for a game.

In DKC2, I almost always used Diddy, because even though Dixie had the float, it was really weak, and Diddy ran faster. There were different situations for each character. In DKCR, if you don't have Diddy, you might as well just quit and return when you have him because it's just less fun without him. I'm not just talking about the temples either.
