As I recall, McCain was doing okay but not doing great with the really conservative base. So he was like "gotta get me one of them far right conservatives" and grabbed her. She spent the rest of the campaign torpedoing him by looking dumb, botching interviews, and dabbling in racism. It's fair to say that once Palin was on board McCain had no chance of winning.
Palin also made McCain's age a factor in the campaign. Mostly due to the idea that 'If McCain does die in office, do we really want to run the risk of President Palin?'
