Well, to further analyze this analogy, more than likely a mother with little to no understanding of gaming is going to buy exactly what the kid asked for. If the kid said 3DS, she'll buy a 3DS. She's unlikely to try and interpret what the kid is saying as anything other than exactly what he said.
The original analogy was DS, though. So logically, she'd buy a DS lite (or an original DS if she managed to find one).
... hmmm. That was interesting. Why'd it do that?
