Ha ha! Neon never made it out of the Basic set. ;)
I'd have to go back through my notes, but I think the last campaign I made they all fought a lich at the end (this was after about 6+ years of campaigning, so everyone was fairly powerful).
There was also one memorable game we had where the party was transporting some really valuable magical item and had to deliver it by ship to some wizard. I had the ship attacked by another wizard who was trying to steal it with the help of some pirates and he also had a water elemental under his control. That battle was particularly epic with the magic item changing hands between friend and foe like something out of an Indiana Jones flick. Good times.
Makes me want to pull all my stuff out of storage. ^_^
I haven't played since second edition so whatever Basic Set is I dunno
