The only thing they dropped the ball on regarding 40+ characters was the painful lack of double or triple techs.
I mean come on. Chrono Trigger had like three times the amount with like a tenth of the characters. Sure most of them had reused animation just used in conjuction that wouldn't fly with polygon models as much, but it's better than nothing!
40+ characters disallowed me from getting emotionally invested in just about anyone especially with practically party banter line being an accent-generator version of the exact same thing anyone else would have said. It really winds up shooting itself in the foot for me.
