Abydos was never outside the Milky Way, and the show didn't start exiting our galaxy until the fourth-season finale, and it didn't do it with any real regularity until Atlantis.
I was playing with what was canon for the movie vs the show. The movie specifically mentioned the probe they sent as going to a different galaxy. I am well aware that it wasn't really until Atlantis that this was an actual regular thing for the show.
