WT-1, if you will.

So, I got in the mood to revisit the stargate series. Considering that it is widely thought of as a top tier sci-fi show, this is unsurprising. Most of you here should know about this show already, hello Jeff, but just in case you are a drunk hobo who broke into a library that still had a computer on that happened to have B8 on the screen and you saw Stargate and mistook it for Seagrams, let me briefly summarize the show:

There are these things called stargates. They are like these gates that lead to...the stars. People do stuff with them.

Simple, no?

Also explosions. Tons of explosions. And wormholes. And aliens. And golf.

I will be updating this topic as I watch through this series again and probably bore you all to tears with banal insights and lukewarm commentary, but at least you can have fun discussing your favorite episodes or ranking characters or whatever it is the hip kids do these days.

First up will be...Children of the Gods part 1 and 2.

Or should it be the movie? It has definitely been ages since I have seen the movie and while a lot of it was tweaked, it is still technically the actual beginning...

Spoilers: I watched the opening to Children of the Gods and could barely stifle my laughter at how silly the goa'uld headpieces looked. Why yes, let us don vision obscuring headpieces that will surely strike terror into our foes as we blindly fire our already inaccurate weaponry in the vague direction of the enemy! Brilliant.

...

admittedly, if an alien wore that while chasing me down, I would probably be a bit scared as it DOES eliminate head blows too, even if it is comical. I can see why they phased these things out later on.

I'd go with the movie first. I don't actually like it all that much, but it is the beginning.

Also, watch the 2008 cut for Children of the Gods. It's better.

Also, if those headdresses are cracking you up, and you're anything remotely like me, prepare to laugh your ass off at the insane melodrama cheese factor in a few of those first-season episodes. All I can say is, they were laughably awful so all was not lost, but thank god they were phased out going forward.

"Emancipation" is amazingly awful, by the way, and it's up like... third. It's... probably the worst garbage in the franchise, which is amazing as SG-1 occurs in the same universe as SGU.

LMAO. I really hope the latter is a joke. "Window" gets mad love, but "200" is considered pretty damn weak across much of the fandom.

Don't get me wrong, it's good. But yeah.

Until Teal'c got hair.

It really did seem like the show went downhill when he got hair.

I loved Seasons 8-10 just as much. But yeah, that is a relative consensus. And by that, I mean you're certainly not alone.

Really, 7-10 were my favorite years, which is blasphemy in some circles, but not as rare as pinning "200" as one of the show's two best.

Huh, so I looked up the changes to CotG...

From rated R to...PG. Just make things look a bit different and take out the nudity scene. Huh.

Since this is Board 8, I fully expect at least two people to come in here and demand you watch whichever version has a nude scene, even though it feels to me (as it always had to the creators) that it clashes with the rest of the product thematically, in silly ways.

Also, the picture and effects look much better in the 2008 cut.

I'll probably end up watching both. CotG, Movie, CotG: The remakening, The rest of the series. I think that is a fair enough way to progress seeing as I am already knee deep in the original CotG and dunno where my copy of the stargate movie ended up...and I think it was vhs to boot. Ah well, there are plenty of solutions for that.

Atlantis was good for a while, but never SG-1 level. It fell apart though. If that doesn't bother you as much as it bothers me, check it out. It also has much more connectivity with SG-1, so that's cool.

Don't watch Universe.

Universe was...well...it um...got a bit better towards the end? Most of it was trying to be like battlestar galactica and kinda dumbed down a lot of things and there was barely any gate action at all. Really, most of the good bits involved characters from the other series. It had its moments, but...not enough.

Atlantis was alright though, as Jeff said, it never quite captured what SG-1 had, but still watchable and still stargate.

Children of the Gods Part 1 and 2 Boobie Edition

This has an overall cinematic feel to it, though there are plenty of things that feel out of place. Like Hammond being such a hardass.

Daniel: 'pretty please let me go save my waifu!'
Hammond: 'YOU ARE IN NO POSITION TO MAKE DEMANDS!'

And the silly ticking clock that was self imposed. A day to complete their mission or else iris is closed forever and transmitter codes will no longer work. Sure, it adds tension but just...idk...seems a bit overkill. I know I wouldn't perform at my best with that layer of stress placed on me. "Hey, we're gonna toss you into an unknown situation on an alien world with minimal backup...BUT DON'T WORRY YOU ONLY HAVE EXACTLY ONE DAY OR ELSE YOU WILL NEVER SEE HOME AGAIN...BETTER HURRY!". Pretty sure this was relaxed some in the rest of the show, or at least downplayed.

A few other things nag at me too, like Teal'c suddenly knowing english and his turning being so abrupt. The dude sees a watch and suddenly his entire life was a lie. Pretty sure I remember them elaborating on his motives down the line though. And howabout that attack ship approaching the group from behind when they were heading towards the gate and it was just there a moment ago. And guns suddenly being able to stop the jaffa warriors. If only they had put their silly head things up they would have been invincible...

I could nitpick this thing all day, but I'll hold off until I see what they do with the remakeing of this. I know a lot of things were altered down the line in the series out of convenience like the language barrier and being thrown out of the gate. Ah wells, on to the movie that was referenced a dozen times in these episodes...

I always attributed Teal'c's knowing of English to the fact that they constantly round up humans. I'm probably way off though and it was just lazy writing.

I've seen the first season of Atlantis and wasn't feeling it. Might borrow the DVDs from my buddy and tough through it.
Universe... Yeah. I saw the first two or so episodes and it just felt like such a drag. I thought maybe I was just tired of SG but I can still happily watch SG-1.

Stargate The Movie (Director's Cut)

This has an overall cinematic feel to it, though there are plenty of things that feel out of place. Like the cast being different.

I can appreciate the trope of the guy with the crazy theory about something that is actually right because of the way the universe the story is set in works. Pyramids built by aliens? Outlandish! (they were actually built by mole people. True story)

Hello one L O'Neil...

Hello Chey...Creek Mountain Colorado Military Instillation.

I...don't think I am going to like Commander Guile there.

So they learn about the stargate and are awed by the spiffy wooshing (neat little swirly backlash woosh too). Brought a probe out and watched it get transported to another gala...the closest planet to earth with a stargate lol retcon.

I never was a fan of how they did the gate travel in this. The whole two sides are cloudy and the other two are spacy and the light stretching...just doesn't say 'wormhole' imo. I guess the light stretching technically should, but eh...

Saw that candy bar earlier. EVIL PRODUCT PLACEMENT o__________o

Also makes alien horse food apparently.

...my word they sure know how to make an alien beast's tongue look realistic.

And the product placement keeps happening. Wait a minute..5th avenue...five races...chocolate coating hiding the peanut buttery goa'uld inside...clearly the candy bar is a representation of all that is stargate.

Movie stuff happens and the spaceship lands. That thing makes me think of a megazord, fostered perhaps by there literally being a pyramid megazord thing at one time. I had the toy. You could fit another megazord in it too it was so big. Now I am wondering who took cues from whom >_>

Ah the lighter bit alluded in the series beginning. You just know they wouldn't be able to get away with a smoking scene like this these days. Or maybe they could, considering it is an established enough trope. Kids, drugs are bad. They turn you into army badasses >_>;;

More standard movie stuff...daniel saved by the sarcophagus and...KITTY <3

I do like how they don't translate the language for the audience. The character's emotions and actions carry the scenes.

More plot. Daniel having fun and finding a way home...

So...the good guys attack the peoples with the headgear with bullets and they fall. This is completely contradictory to what happened later! Stargate is a lie! The masks were up so they were clearly invincible!

Shame they don't have a rocket launcher to deal with the flying ships this time...or maybe it is because of this time that they did.

Also, as Daniel's love interest...I can never remember her name. Shalalala something...as she finished reviving I swear there was a ding sound as the thing opened.

Plot stuff, movie ends, and gosh that was really not that great a movie. The pacing sucked and the sfx were meh and I know the series turned out awesome, but this little adventure was dull overall. My impressions I had going by hazy recollection were that it was a pretty meh movie too, so huzzah for reinforcing that I guess.

I read that it was originally planned to be a trilogy of movies and that another mythological influence would have been introduced in the second, and then the two would be tied together in the third. There is a series of books based of one of the writer's notes. There were apparently talks some years back about making these movies a reality. I...think I will stick with the direction the tv series went.

Mmm, do want to see what they do with the remaked version of CotG, but also wanna continue onward. I think I will let it sit for a little, enough to let some of the minor details fade, but not long enough to forget too much so that the changes will still stand out. Maybe at the end of the season....

Episode 3: The Enemy Within

Coming directly from the movie, Jack is instantly 10x more likable and having Daniel and Sam around helps too.

Ahh theme song goodness, I remember when scifi decided that the show did not need a full theme. I also remember them changing their name and turning into a wrestling and B-movie network with science sprinkled in to kill time...

Hammond remains a little overly cruel with the whole "This is the first alien we have seen, even though really he is pretty much human, but SCIENCE! demands we poke and prod him like an animal."

Hmm...first mention of the Tau'ri. Yay humanity!

Man the goa'uld in Kawalsky sure seems to hate people in white >_>;;

This goa'uld seems less like an infant and more like a teenager. "Grr. Let me Go. I will DESTROY you! Grrrr!"

Suddenly Hammond is not so evil now as he plays the morality card against Jerkface McYayTorture.

Some wrestling over life and death and what they should do. Surgery proceeds to become a thing.

Operation: Success But with a twist...genre savvy and hazy memory tells me there is a twist here.

Yup...

So the thing tries the exact same thing...but seems to fare a little better except for "i need to prove my loyalty' Teal'c standing in the way.

Teal'c: YOU SHALL NOT PASS

Stargate Lobotomy. Ouch.

And everything afterwards was rainbows and lollipops. The end.

Not a bad episode, flowed well and though the twists and turns were obvious enough, it all worked to peel away at another layer of the overarching plot. A little more was learned about the enemy and the full team has now been officially formed. I hear from a reliable source that the next episode sucks balls.

It kinda boggles me when I think about it sometimes that this show was made in the 90's. Same with a lot of good shows. This was the period where serials thrived. They still do to some extent today, but not as much (especially compared to procedural shows). I found this list on wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_%28radio_and_television%29#Popular_serial_dramas

Some good stuffs there

Probably not good stuff here. Let's get on with the episode then...

Episode 4: Emancipation

Hey guyz...guyz...I got a joke.

Why can't Helen Keller drive?

Anyone? Give up?

Because she is dead.

I can see where this episode is going though...and I guess we shall see how it plays out.

Hm...space asians. That doesn't sound so bad...does that sound so bad? Sure they hate women but...c'mon. Space asians.

Definitely dropped the language thing fast too. 900 years this culture has not been around on earth. Perfect modern english.

D'ohoho Sam gets to be an anthropologist for a day...because the whole...woman thing...

"You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen!" -___- And I still have 30 minutes to go.

...

Oh hey, I must have blacked out for a second there and the end credits were rolling. On to the next episode...

Brought a probe out and watched it get transported to another gala...the closest planet to earth with a stargate lol retcon.

Abydos was never outside the Milky Way, and the show didn't start exiting our galaxy until the fourth-season finale, and it didn't do it with any real regularity until Atlantis.

Good write-ups though. "The Enemy Within" is probably SG-1's best first-season episode out of the first several, not counting the pilot.

Most people seem to love "Cold Lazarus", which is coming up not too long from now for you, but it is way too damn cheesy for me and useful only for laughing. You'll probably at least see what I mean toward the end. It's just the climax of that episode that is just so goddamn awful, but laughable as hell, but most Stargate fans hold it as some mighty lofty sign of amazing dramatic character development. It's great to do an O'Neill's-past ep, but man.

Also, "Singularity", the one that introduces Cassandra. Cheesy as all gitout, for similar reasons. But a lot of fans like it. To me they're possibly the worst in the first season not counting "Emancipation". The first year was really... I mean, Stargate has always been cheesy, but it learned to thrive on that cheese in all the right ways. Not so much early on.

I was playing with what was canon for the movie vs the show. The movie specifically mentioned the probe they sent as going to a different galaxy. I am well aware that it wasn't really until Atlantis that this was an actual regular thing for the show.

One thing I will say about the last episode though, Teal'c going "What is an Oprah?" was worth a chuckle :p

Episode 5: The Broca Divide

I like how they are still a bit hesitant at the gate. It is still pretty new to them and there is a certain amount of awe it commands. Later on it becomes so routine like riding a bike and it is nice to see some training wheels still in place so to speak.

A world of light and dark...wouldn't there be many many miles of twilight between the...right, right, tv show, carry on.

Minoan culture. Neat. Not much known about that culture iirc, it is nice to see representation that is not just stereotypical ancient empires.

...even if it is just for a minute. Welp.

Good thing this episode is taking place in 1997ish so that a president that appreciates science and culture would be in office (zing?)

I was kinda hoping this wasn't the episode O'Niell went caveman (I seem to remember a bajillion 'last time on sg-1' bits calling back to this), but tbh, the setup for this outbreak hasn't really been so bad.

Aaand hello Carter in a tanktop. The secret aim of the writers was to confuse everyone on the issue of woman rights. Should they be submissive? Aggressive? Who knows what zany thing carter will do next?!

First appearance of that doc lady too.

If you want to get technical, the notion of a virus from another world affecting someone from earth is slightly improbable as viruses are sorta tuned to the alien environments they are in. However, equally technically, humans are everywhere in this galaxy so said environments are hardly alien; flora and fauna all seem suspiciously canadian too >_>. Really, everyone going through the stargate should all have died of plagues long ago.

"It seems to mess with body chemicals...all of them." All the body chemicals....all of them.

Teal'c gets to play one man hero while everyone else decides to become cavemen.

I am unsure why he even needed the blood sample though as it should have been obvious enough to doctor lady that she and Jackson had allergies and that as she already said, this thing did stuff to histamine. I guess it never hurts to have confirming evidence though...

Puppies and sunshine and spoilers: The good guys win.

I've never been a huge fan of plagues, but this episode treats the concept well, though there are a lot of questionable things one can nitpick like how an allergy prone doctor could handle the plague herself when everyone else was going nuts. It would only take one crazy to get in a lucky tackle and well...no plot cure for the base. Good thing main character disease has infected most of the base too eh?

And that is me done for the night. Plenty more gate fun to come...

Yeah, "Broca" isn't too bad. Daniel and his... mate was pretty silly, but really, the whole thing was silly, but not in a terrible way. Seeing Janet Fraser for the first time was neat. And lolol @ the Womens Rights thing with Carter. Yeah. She gets a few obligatory "I've fallen in loooove" episodes too, and her feminism really gets toned down over time as well. But she evolves into a far better character for it, because the writing was so hamfisted on the issue to begin with that it's not like she was legitimately thought-provoking with those organ insults.

I actually read an interview with Amanda Tapping a few years back when she complained to high heaven about that line. I feel ya, Amanda.

My girlfriend and I adopted one of our many mainstay in-jokes when I showed her this episode. "Me. Give. Give." O'Neill's Neanderthatlic requests have been re-used quite a few times when one of us has asked the other for water and such.

Episode 6: The First Commandment

I nearly choked on my food when I saw those silly head covers...literally (o_o) faces...except far more comical. I can not take them seriously now.

I like some of the little details they do. Like carter mentions there being no birds and we also hear the planet has high UV rays which would fry birds and anything else trying to live too long in the sun.

Oh...nice...riiiight as Hanson starts beating on the dude, some guys come by the foreground with a log conveniently blocking the assumed hits.

Hanson: "Please, sit down".

http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/205/251/hansenlol.jpg?1322001926

Coincidence? Probably.

Damnit Sam, pull the trigger. He is a crazy and you are just prolonging the plot and continuing the confusion on how women should behave!

-_-

While the general plot is a bit...bleh...Teal'c and that random dude being god betrayal buddies was lulz.

I also like how "This is solid rock" is the cue for Teal'c to get his staff mojo working...and that sounded less perverted in my mind.

Oh wow...it made a perfect circular hole...such a precision tool those staff weapons >_>

Plot goes as expected and we all learn a valuable lesson that playing god is bad. We also learn that shields work by trickling down spherically from an arc because somehow that is a sensical thing for the color orange to do. O'Neill also tells us that killing is wrong. Unless they are bad guys, then it is totes ok. Pew pew pew dead goa'uld~

They never did explain those silly head coverings did they. Were they supposed to be rock? Primitive UV blocking? That would...make decent sense actually.

Yeah, it wasn't horrible, it just existed in its own little microcosm with only token elements of stargate present.

Episode 7: Cold Lazarus

Some of my episode numberings seem to be a little off so I will be double checking with wiki and other sources for production numbers and such. Almost called this episode Brief Candle which is not for a few more eps. Probably won't matter much though.

I can appreciate the jarring yellow and blue landscape...looks suitably alien. Can't ever trust alien crystals though, always hiding something mystical. Can't a crystal just be pretty? Like, if aliens were to visit earth to see our bountiful supply of quartz, they probably would not expect the crystal to do anything but be crystal...

So this episode looks like your standard clone episode. These tend to vary a lot in quality, but this is stargate so I am sure it will turn out ok as long as Sam does not whine about crystal people rights or something.

I know Daniel is supposed to be language and archeology boy, but c'mon Electromagnetic is like..pretty basic stuff, surely you took at least a basic physics class doctor Jackson! What kind of geek are you?

D'ohoho crystal people can't understand how human people work.

Meanwhile, Teal'c discovers TV. For a minute. Nothing good was on.

Love the blending of culture summed up in a quote. "Your world is a strange place" "So's yours" *cue Daniel looking obviously confused as to what prompted Teal'c comment*

These flashbacks are annoying and I don't really care about O'Neill's past.

Actually...Jack EM'Field seems to be doing ok with the ex. Well, was until the plot demanded he develop energy problems.

The rest of the gang get to reunite with Jack O'Real and receive exposition from a talking crystal.

I have to imagine Hammond giving the 'remember kiddos, the stargate is a secret. shhhh' is for Teal'c benefit (really, the audience), because thinking that anyone part of the program would just blab about such a thing is kinda...weird.

Oh...turns out the whole thing really IS crystal people didn't understand how human people work. Silly crystals, life is for kids! Except Charlie.

Crystal Charlie and Jack go through the gate and the episode ends. Stargate command has gotta be wishing the MiB flash device were real so that Jack's former wife would not be needing an explanation. Clearly it was a super secret robotics experiment that Jack was the head of. He made a bot to look like him and his son. He was obsessed you see, and needs help. Stargate? No Ma'am, totally not an interstellar wormhole portal. It was where the robots are being kept, in an abandoned observatory, the gateway to the stars you see...

Yeah. I'd buy it.

The Teal'c/Daniel thing is excellent, I forgot about that.

I just... I'm sorry, I just lose it every time O'Neill's ex-wife yells "Charlie!" in glorious 1997 Showtime slo-mo.

The robots are designed to study deep space radar telemetry.

Also, Teal'c on bringing his staff weapon: "I have seen your world. I will need it."

That was another line I quite liked Mauron. Really, the whole cast is full of good lines and I would pretty much have to post the scripts to get them all o_o

Huh, this is episode 13 in dvd order. lol. I am pretty sure I remember somewhere along the line being spoiled by dvd order but I suppose for a season 1 thing, it isn't so critical yet as these episodes stand alone for the most part.

Episode 8: The Nox

One of the five races. The Goa'uld fear them. We pretty much never see them again. This is what I remember going into this episode.

So the gov't dude doesn't like that the stargate hasn't been able to wrestle advanced tech from primitive worlds despite encountering things that with study could already yield impressive things. Good thing they will be encountering a super advanced race that will gladly sha...bah who am I kidding. Like any serious knowledge will be gained here, this is season 1!

Spoilers: The stargate eventually will bring back super duper awesome tech

Running through my head: "Where did he go? That Invisibo!" <3 you Freakazoid

Naturally, out of everyone they could meet, they stumble upon Apophis. Small world. This makes enough sense I guess as Teal'c is specifically guiding them and he worked for the dude. *shrugs*

And Sg-1 is defeated. Man, they did not last long, here is hoping SG-2 is more durable...

Oh, well then. Totally a surprise they lived. Really.

Maybe I should pretend to be stumped that these people seem to be primitives but are actually super advanced...

Ah well, the morality play is half over anyway. Man that not killing commandment sure did not last long.

US VS THEM WE ARE RIGHT AND THEY ARE WRONG GRRRRRRRR. -___- I probably would not complain if aliens visited earth and decided to blow it up.

Oh yeah...first time seeing that shield thing that Apophis has too. Because they can't make it THAT easy to capture a system lord...

Yadda yadda more invisibo fun and SG-1 acting concerned for the Nox's safety and the show gears up for the final act.

Which ends with gumdrops and snowflakes and the stargate to be buried also flying island. SG-1's first glimpse at an advance race that demonstrates that humanity is not the only technological fish in the pond (a welcome break from cavepeople and other tech challenged civs.).

Episode 9: Brief Candle

Greeeeeeeeeeeece iiiiiiiin spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace

Mongles, Minoans, Egyptians...truly the Greeks could not be far behind.

Hello Chekhov's Birthmark.

Is that...a flower pizza? If I know my video games right, that should not only restore health but also let you shoot fireballs...

Or maybe just drugs you and makes you open to the power of suggestion.

Cue the next day when the birthmark is revealed on a boy that is suspiciously not a baby. As it turns out, these people only live for 100 days. Welp.

And now Jack will become old and die unless SG-1 can find a cure! Will our brave hero who still has many seasons ahead of him perish so soon?

Yes, and he will be replaced by his robot double duh. That actually becomes a thing down the line iirc. Damn replicators. But I get ahead of myself...

You know, this virus pretty much makes them antivampires. Can only be in daylight, decidedly not immortal, and no need to hunt. Huh.

Though it also makes one question, why 60-100ish years? What fun would it be if this same plot were taken to the other extreme and an alien were to visit earth and declare that the natural human lifespan actually should have been 500 centuries. That would be fun. True immortality would blow, but living for millennia? Awesomeness.

Poor cranky old man Jack, he barely has time to think these kinds of thoughts!

I like this O'Neill, and I like how the apple comment they made about this place being a paradise is apt. They really are destroying it with knowledge...

I remember I loved the concept of this episode. Resolved a bit quickly, but the underlying themes it provokes makes this episode well worth it. We'll probably never see these people again, even if they seemed to have something like replicators in them >_>;;

With a lot of these episodes I can certainly feel the dialogue between the cast and the bonds starting to form etc, but being devoid of much backstory to refer too, the plots in most of these are necessarily weaker than what will come. I can definitely see where Stargate will find itself in a season or two, but for now it is a collection of episodes with us humans just flailing around and seeing what happens. This episode should be a nice plot related one as I know who Thor will be...

Episode 10: Thor's Hammer

I remember Thor, he was a cool character. Om nom Asgard. Don't think they are actually seen in this episode though...

Oh right, they don't know who actually built the stargates yet. Wow. That makes sense...man being in season 1 sucks.

I mean...erm...d'ohohoho that crazy Jackson. Of course aliens visited Earth in the past, everyone knows that! But DOUBLE aliens? Lock this guy up! (Spoilers: We were also the aliens...sorta, whaaaat a twiiiiiizt)

I gotta say though, Jackson's presentation leaves something to be desired. "So there was this God Thor, right? He protected humanity by using something called...Thor's Hammer -_________-

Nevermind that there are a bajillion gods many of whom have self named weapons, Teal'c has some confirming exposition. Kawoooooosh~

So, viking world. Shame "Daniel, you're on" has no meaning now that everyone speaks Common. Poor chap, half his character neutered because of narrative convenience.

Maybe it is a little overdone, but I like this lady's speech. Yay fantasy scifi <3

Nice chat with a former goa'uld too. This place is full of surprises :D

Oooh...being influenced by the host and leading the goa'uld that took her over to Thor's Hammer. Niiice.

Unas...I vaguely remember this guy. I am pretty sure there are some later plot points down the line, but they escape me atm. Outside sources tell me he is voiced by Darth Vader. Huh.

Poor Unas, bullets hurt him. Shame there is an unwritten rule about not aiming for the head because lol hero (this is probably a trope). The thing revives and decides to be a little more diplomatic...turns out bullets still hurt.

Man that is damn convenient thunder that happens every time Kendra needs to make a decision....maybe Thor has the hots for her and is stalking her from above and aiding her with her choices. "Should I have a bologna sandwich or a salad for lunch?" *rumble* "Thor asks that I make a salad and...no...that is not how a carrot is used Thor...gosh"

The big bad monster is defeated and Daniel has to put aside his feelings for his wife to save Teal'c. Because as we all know, the staff weapon could not possibly cut through the rock from the outside and leave the hammer intact. Nope. Certainly wouldn't make a circular hole either.

But yes, very nice episode that does good by furthering the mythos of the series some and it is always nice to find allies who are antigoa'uld.

Episode 11: The Torment of Tantalus

Ye Olde Stargate Program. Interesting. Manual turning...oh how far we have come.

So Ernest goes to heaven...sounds like some kind of silly comedy movie. Poor old lady who gave Daniel the pendant in the movie...lost her love and now will have to search for upwards of 30 minutes to find him. Amazing how many problems can be solved in that span of time...

I like how it is both stated but not overly so that the reason they are encountering goa'uld so much is because the only planets they can currently dial are ones goa'uld have been to, due to the Abydos coordinates they gained. Once they gain other sources the show can open up more and introduce less goa'uld centric worlds, but for now....pretty much luck.

So they go through and instantly find the geezer who has been so long removed from civilization that he forgot what clothes were. Ew.

50 years alone...you would have to be crazy not to go insane from being isolated that long >_>

Ok, so hallucinating Catherine. Perfectly understandable.

And the Dial Home Device is borked. Welp. At least they can spend the rest of their years in a neat castle! Assuming it will defy O'Neill's expectations.

So Daniel thinks the atoms are language. Like a carpenter thinking every problem can be solved with a hammer. What a small world he lives in.

Anyway, four races. I saw nordic runes for the Asgard and what looks like evil writing for the goa'uld. The other two who knows what they could be (Nox and Furlings >_>)

Sam and Teal'c try to macguyver the gate into working, but alas, the DHD decided to sleep with the fishes. IF ONLY THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE IN THE CASTLE THAT HAD A LOT OF POWER AND VAGUELY LOOKED LIKE A DHD.

Sadly they can not use it because Daniel wants to understand the meaning of everything. Maybe in a few years kiddo....>_>

Plan B: Lightning

Daniel in the meantime, doesn't care about getting home at all. Character consistent and I kinda agree with him. Though I kinda also agree that said knowledge is useless if it can not be communicated. If I were in his shoes, I would be obsessive about it too though.

Oh hey, scene from the opening credits. Shocking.

I like how they did not show the manual dialing and just...wormhole.

Not a bad episode either. Sure the only enemy here was time, but what they found was still neat. An ancient gathering place for the races. Why this would be a castle on a cliff with dangerous storms once a year...who knows.

They're the actual fourth race, but we never see them, ever. Season 10's "200" has a great joke about them.

"Torment of Tantalus" is generally regarded as one of the finest episodes of the first season, and I mostly agree. It seems you didn't like it quite as much as the majority of the fandom, but yeah, it's not bad at least.

Pretty sure they were legit but never seen for some reason or another and were heavily speculated about by fans and it got to the point where it was like a gag. Or maybe I am misremembering things. One surefire way to find out, taking things one episode at a time...

And yeah. that scene from 200 is like...the only thing I remember from it >_>

Torment was certainly a good episode and I loved Daniel's struggle. The scene with the elements is one of the few I remembered from the early seasons as it was quite memorable. Like, if I were to rate the episode overall I would give it something like 8/10

Anywho...more door to the heavens tiem.

Episode 12: Bloodlines

Experimentation with a drug that will replace having a goa'uld in Teal'c. You know how medicine is. All those studies that need to be done and all that FDA approval. Why, it could be YEARS before they stumble upon something that works...

Also Teal'c is a family man. Indeed.

So the plot is shaping up to be "Teal'c's son is about to become a Jaffa and the gang must head back to Chulak to stop the mean goa'uld and maybe capture some larvae for SCIENCE! and stuff." Ehh...guess it works alright. A bit overly serious, but I suppose it is hard for it not to be. Might even be the seed for future Jaffa revolting down the line.

I could nitpick that a Chulak day and Earth day are almost certainly not synchronous so Teal'c would have a devil of a time knowing exactly when this ritual would occur buuuuuut....

Nice little plan they have. I see they had Daniel sneeze there at the gate as the camera panned out. I hear his allergy thing was downplayed more and more, so it is nice seeing these little details present.

Enter the Bra'tac. Pretty spry for an old guy. We will be seeing a good deal more of him. I never knew his name was spelt like that until looking it up. I always had it in my head as Bray'tac or something that was a bit less like woman's undergarments.

Jack: Well, we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.
Bra'tac: No. The bridge is too well guarded.
Jack: No, actually there, I was using a cliché that...

Nonearthlings not grasping our idioms is always worth a chuckle :D

Bra'tac: Teal'c tells me your world is without gods. Difficult to imagine.
Jack: Well it's not without gods. A lot of people believe there's a God. Not everyone believes in the same God, the same way but...let's just say nobody believes in anyone with glowing eyes and a snake in his head.
Bra'tac: Then you serve no one?
Jack: I serve the SGC under a General Hammond. Bra'tac: So this Hammond is...?
Jack: Just a man. A very good...very bald man. From Texas.

With a series like this it would be far too easy to clutter up every post with quotes...it pretty much has just the right amount of humor blended with seriousness. Sure, every now and then the proportions get a bit inverted, but those extreme cases are just icing on a cake. Now I want cake >_<

Oh huh...Teal'c's (apostrophes and alien names, ****ing with possessive apostrophes since Tolkien) wife is Alison Blake and Eliza Maza from Eureka and Gargoyles respectively.

Sam: Daniel, what are you thinking?
Daniel: Just that every single one of these infant Goa'ulds will one day take a human life, and all I have to do is...
Sam: If we kill them when they're as vulnerable as they are right now, we'd be not better than the Goa'uld. Lets go.
(turns and shoots the infant Goa'uld)

Man, this episode is turning out to be pretty quotable, or maybe I am just realizing how easy it is to c/p some quotes I like :3

The way the two branches of the story happen to work out is...contrived, but highly believably. Not every show can do that.

Did I mention Bra'tac is awesome?

I hit the character limit on that last writeup. Imma have to tone down the quoting it seems...was gonna throw this in at the end:

I liked this episode more than I thought I would. Sure, nothing especially momentous happened, but it was a good character piece for Daniel and Teal'c. Both find people they care about wrapped up in this goa'uld mess and it shows.

Continuing onward...

Episode 13: Fire and Water

I should keep a Daniel death counter. How many times is it now?

This shock feels a bit unnatural. This isn't the first time people have been killed on the show, though I suppose being a main character some reaction would be warranted...

Doctor lady agrees with me.

Also Daniel is alive....and forced to translate something for some crazy alien. I like how they make a dramatic to do about the alien telling Daniel that he will cooperate OR DIE. Just...lulz considering the first part of this episode.

Apparently there was some Babylon influence that may or may not have ties with the uprising that tossed the goa'uld from earth.

Anyway, the super alien science is defeated by earth hypnosis and we get exposition on what happened before Daniel didn't die.

They go back and everything works out without conflict. It is nice to see that every now and then.

An ok episode, but nothing too special.

Episode 14: Hathor

Some archeologists are poking around Mayan ruins and stumble upon a goa'uld. Because when I think Mayan ruins, I think Egyptian goddesses. o_O

Cool that Daniel gets a shoutout for his crackpot theories.

They capture a woman who knows about the stargate....who calls herself Hathor...which Daniel explains is an egyptian goddess...and their first thought is not 'ZOMG GOA'ULD LOCK HER UPPPPPPPPPP'? o_____O

Frankly, my suspension of disbelief is shattered and I can not take what follows seriously...were they drunk when they made this episode?

Daniel: Hathor was the Egyptian goddess for fertility, inebrity and music.
Jack: Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll?
Daniel: In a manner of speaking.

This was a nice quote though.

She can take over men with powers because...the plot demands it. Seriously these people were drunk.

They are literally surprised she can be a goa'uld, considering the idea most outlandish. Because...drunk writers.

I need a drink.

I should try and say something positive. I...like how the bad guy is less hammy and more subtle in what she does. She is also a redhead and redheads are smexy.

Scenes are dragging on far longer than they should, and smart people are being waaaay to slow to catch on....the same people who encounter alien oddities on a regular basis now. The same people who know she is goa'uld but still do not know the full extent of what goa'uld are capable of so should be a liiiiiiittle more proactive.

Hello netscape navigator...lol 90's internet. Wait...that is a lot of /'s in the address: file.///c/http/www/ancient/external/hathor.html

Another positive thing: "code of life" is a neat term for DNA

Really though...all the men on the base are hers? Really? Looks to me like 90% of her time has been with Daniel and the other two we saw her infect. Sure, she has the commander, but c'mon there has to be hundreds of men at this place. -____-

Shouldn't they...maybe carry tranq guns to..you know...not hurt anyone? Are they tranq guns? They never stated and they look like deadly guns...-__-

Libidinous. Ok plot, sure. Keep on moving...

I like how they keep passing a gun around as if they will actually use it...

Good thing that sarcophagus was destroyed or else Teal'c would have had to have been healed too...

Oh hey, they explained the no tranq thing...but stiiill kinda stupid.

And somehow after the tub Hathor was in burst into flames because....gunfire, she escapes through the stargate somehow and...everyone is instantly freed from her spell. Proximity is the reason given but...these are airborne chemicals and with this explanation she shouldn't be able to affect someone in another room argh...thankfully it is over.

Here is something tvtropes has to say about this episode.

Discontinuity Nod: See also Canon Discontinuity.

The first season episode "Hathor" was widely disliked by fans and, though the Hathor character did reappear, the specific details of the episode were never revisited. In follow-up episodes, whenever the events were discussed one of the characters would comment that they had agreed never to talk about that again.

And that is really all there is to say on the matter.

Episode 15: Singularity

So it would seem that Jack knows what an accretion disk is. *cue astonishment from rest of team*

Getting to observe a black hole eclipse...very few things could compare to this. As a wise man once said, Science rules.

...or not? Apparently everyone died. Welp.

After looking around they find a little girl. Is she patient zero? A goa'uld? A patient goa'uld?

Stargate material in her blood and not a goa'uld. Interesting...

And Sam wants to stay because, in her words, this eclipse could "change the course of human history". Overly dramatic much?

One thing I do like so far is that they set up a facility there on the planet. They are getting more used to traveling through the gate and having people stationed at places, even if this would have been a temp thing. Progress.

Teal'c: I still do not understand this black hole.
Jack: Well a black hole is...is really...a big thing. It's uh...basically it's a...massive...hole... ok?
Teal'c: I see...
Jack: Ah, and...what happens is, everything gets sucked in to it. Even light. That's why we can't see it. It...just...gets...sucked in...
Teal'c: Thank you.
Jack: Sure.

But he knows what an accretion disk is at least.

Aaand Cassandra is a bomb. Probably. What else would that thing in her be? *paddles get used* kaboooooooooooom~

...almost. Luckily the pulse returned.

Nice little experiment. Potassium vs Naquadah. kaboooooooooom~

Meanwhile on planet Dead People, O'Neill and Tea'c (apostrophe buddies) discover a goa'uld attack vessel.

Goa'uld: Using our own morality against us since 1997. Crafty buggers they are.

Ooh...another title scene...death glider flying through the gate. Shame the two pilots graduated from stormtrooper academy.

Good thing earth gate is so slow to dial...

So their plan to prevent the bomb from killing everything is to place her deep underground in an abandoned nuke storage place. Let's see how that works out for them...

Sam isn't really liking this as she has bonded to the bomb you see...because that is what women do according to the writers...they become mothers. They are also sex symbols and slaves as seen earlier this season. Yup.

Teal'c in a suit. Teal'c. In a suit. Also Jack and his 'earth rule' about kids having dogs. Everything and everyone looks nice and ha...KABOOOOOOOOM~

Was an alright episode. Shame everyone died like that at the end; man those goa'uld sure know how to make bombs. Could have used more black hole observation, but at least we get to see that there are different flavors of goa'uld.

Arrrrrrgh, 2/3rds through the season and I KNOW that much awesome will be had there. But I gotta wade through a few more episodes >_<

Episode 16: Cor-Ai

SG-1 pops into a recently deserted area that has some interesting architecture.

Not surprisingly, the locals burst out with something like crossbows.

The main native apparently knows Teal'c and has this to say (paraphrasing) "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

I like how this is almost a callback to the nox episode. The elders said to leave, and O'Neill merrily said it was important to respect their elders. Sadly, Teal'c needs to stay for the plot. Apparently he is actually guilty. Dun dun duuuuun.

So, they could escape but, Jackson and Teal'c are being justice buddies, much to Jack's Chaotic Good shenanigans.

Law and Order IIIIIIIIIIN SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE.

O'Neill and Teal'c have a pretty nice dialogue here. Chain of command, burden of guilt. Good stuff.

The guy of the father that died gets to be judge, jury, and possibly executioner. Despite SG-1 defending him, Teal'c is slated to die by his own weapon. Dun dun duuuuuun

Hopefully Jack and Sam can bring in the cavalry to save the day. Or maybe the Goa'uld will just happen to come by and Teal'c can save the dude in dramatic irony.

Damnit Hammond, be reasonable. Teal'c is people too!

Ah the invincible snakemask'd jaffa return. Bullets...do nothing. But trip them with the gun? Totally super effective. Also knives. Sorta a flaw when most of the people you deal with would only have stabbity weapon tier tech eh?

Guess the goa'uld knew they would be needed for the plot. Awfully convenient, but it mostly works. All in all, not the worst. Teal'c constantly demanding to be kept a prisoner was a little annoying, but it all worked out. So jew see kids, if you are ordered to commit atrocities, it is ok. It is your leader's fault and not your own.

One thing I found odd about Singularity:

Cassandra: Those things that I have never seen before (because I'm from Canada) and are not currently being used look fun. What are they?
Main cast member that responded (probably O'Neill or Frasier): They're swings. Want to try them out?

When have not in use swings ever looked fun to someone who hasn't seen them before?
