Kind of a turning point for Crinn. For the first time, he is realizing what exactly he's doing. I kind of a had a feeling Dirk would die when they showed him looking at his family picture, and then later on Rocky asked if Crinn would be able to kill someone he knew.
There is something about these older shows that really made you care when a character died. I was much more emotionally effected when Dirk, a character who had minimal screen time and was shown to be basically an average dude, died than I did when Nicol died in Seed. Better writing? Maybe. I'm not exactly sure what it is to be honest.
