Obama did better than Kerry or Clinton in the overall vote too! Plus, Obama is (or at least was in 2008) personally very popular, but in many cases it doesn't extend to Democrats or liberal ideas in general. IIRC, during the Bush presidency, much was made of the younger generation (those born since the Reagan presidency) being more conservative than earlier ones (especially the Baby Boomers).
