And while I do love this part of the game, I gotta admit there’s no defending what happens in the scene after this fight. I was facepalming throughout the entire thing where they try to make you think Goofy died, thinking, “Are they really trying to do this? Seriously?” For one, you knew he wasn’t actually going to die, and it’s Goofy, man. I’m supposed to take a Goofy death scene to be a serious and emotional moment? This is one of those times where I hope nobody walks in while I’m playing, but hey, it doesn’t last for long, so it’s not too bad.
Plus, everything picks right back up because now you get to do a string of battles fighting along your great Final Fantasy buddies, Leon, Tifa, and Cloud (and Yuffie, too, I guess)! I dunno, I just love the idea of getting to team up with them even for a couple of minutes and even though it’s not like you even need their help to win. It’s like, “This is why I got into Kingdom Hearts.” At least, it is for me, being a big FF fanatic and all. I also love the scene where Leon and Cloud are standing back to back, casually talking about the Heartless invasion like it’s no big deal and then they leap into the fray. So cool.
And then it’s time for the 1000 Heartless battle. Like I said before, this moment was pretty hyped up in trailers before the game’s release, so I was really looking forward to it and seeing if you would actually get to fight all those Heartless or not. The cool thing is that yes, you actually do have to defeat 1000 Heartless, but I was kinda disappointed because the trailer featured a lot more kinds of Heartless, including some pretty beastly ones like Behemoths. I guess they didn’t want the fight to be too difficult just due to the sheer number of Heartless you have to beat to win, but still, they could’ve at least included a few high level enemies or something. It’s not a difficult sequence since you have an abundant number of Reaction Commands at your disposal to wipe out several at a time, and even if you choose not to use them, the fight’s not that hard. It just takes quite a bit longer. Regardless, it’s still a unique moment in the series and I enjoy it for the atmosphere and the scale of the battle. Good stuff all around here.
