The studio 'franchise' system definitely started with "Jaws" and "Star Wars", but the way you're going about with this argument War has a point with "Gone With The Wind".
I agree with the gist of your statement but you're making an already-tough sell all the tougher with how you're presenting the supposed evidence. It would be nice to see this era of relentless superhero movies come to a close within the next ten or so years and "The Avengers" certainly isn't contributing to such a future, but frankly if it's as good for the fans as the fans are saying, it should be praised and seen despite what you've said.
That and Joss Whedon deserves most of the money he can get, so yeah.
