Everything just feels better man.
It goes faster in every respect for one, which can be a huge deal, ask anyone who played the SNES games on the PS1.
The DS also only allowed up to 3 enemies on the screen at once as opposed to the 9 on NES, so lots of things get screwed up in the process, like enemies getting multiple hits per turn.
