I played a bit of FFIII back in the early days emu's, and I thought it was not too bad. (I had played through 4 and 5 a little before this). I haven't went back to the original version since. Now FFIIIDS, gawd I went out and bought that first day. I was stoked for it. Needless to say I ended up trading it because something just didn't feel right with that version (I got pretty far into it, but only because I forced myself to play it and get my $40 worth). FFIVDS was great, though.
And yeah, gotta appreciate FFIII at least for giving us a interchangeable job system and summons i guess.
