For me, it was FAR too sweet. I'm a huge fan of the red wines, especially the more bitter ones. I'll drink white, fruity wine, but I can't handle too much. I thought plum wine was one of the sweetest I've ever had.
I think it was acquired. I'm in the same boat as you. At first it was just too damn sweet but I gradually came to like that about it. Definitely wasn't expecting a red wine that sweet the first time around though!
