This mentality has always seemed pretty silly to me. People play games to have fun. That fun - story included - isn't something that has to be "earned" or treated as a "reward." It's the fundamental point of the activity. For some, overcoming those challenges is part of that fun, but that's no more or less legitimate than people who have more fun mindlessly button mashing their way through the story.
