Antivaxxers especially are driven by multiple levels of fear.

And yet characterize wanting to actually do something about the worst public health crisis in a century as "fearmongering."

The most annoying thing is that their fear is very justifiable. The fact that they've been able to watch this vaccine emerge in real time in response to a crisis has been a really weird experience for people that don't understand how the process usually works (and why), and I fully understand that being unnerving. Instead of trying to understand the situation better so they can feel more comfortable with it, though, they accuse everyone else of being the scared ones, double down on anything that suggests that they're doing the right thing and are not acting out of fear at all, and refuse to change their mind because they've built that refusal into their personal identity.
