Nether sympathy nor empathy require a person to have personally experienced the exact situation. I don't know where you got this idea to correct something that did not require correction in any way. Just as an aside, I know semantics aren't the point of this debate, but for future reference: if you're gonna correct somebody's word choice, make sure you actually know what the words mean.
