I know I have to be wrong otherwise it wouldn't be 'hard' mode but mentally to me getting 1 letter in the correct place seems to narrow down the number of potential words more than knocking out 1 additional letter. Imagine the word is BOUND And your first guess is ROUND Now you have to rule out SOUND and FOUND and HOUND and MOUND and WOUND while only being able to change 1 letter per guess.
