I'm 36. I grew up in the 90s, graduating in 03'. So no, I'm not either. I'm also Atlantic Canadian, and our laws on this kind of thing are a bit more lax than other places.

There is no edge to it. You fire someone because they don't know how to do their job, or constantly are at odds with other staff, not because of a love tap on the back of the head because someone isn't thinking straight, or is spacing out which can cause a bigger issue especially if they are handling equipment. Again, as I said before, you don't do it all the time, but to call it "Assault" is ridiculous. It can be viewed as wrong, and management should talk to them about it, but they aren't "Assaulting" you.
