As for @Zeus ...those are some interesting takes. Where do you get your info? I don't want to derail the topic, so I'll just go with:
1) Lincoln was chosen as the Republican candidate largely because he had moderate views in regards to slavery at the time. He promised to preserve slavery where it currently existed...and South Carolina still seceded before he took office because they demanded expansion. There was no stopping secession: it was just a matter of when.
2) As for Washington: rules aren't rules until someone agrees to follow them. Rules stop being rules once people stop following them. The most important thing Washington had to do in office was to respect the system and follow the rules, and he did. If he didn't we could have gone authoritarian quickly like many (most, frankly) other attempted democracies.
