I was surprised, but not shocked. The fact that she made it to 99 is incredible, and after a certain point you've just gotta accept that it'll happen any day now.

David Bowie shocked me, he was in his late 60's and he died of cancer a couple days after his last album released. I got into Norm MacDonald after he passed, but that was a case where the death of a celebrity was like such a waste, like how much more levity and brilliance might they have produced if they hadn't died?

Betty White continuing to appear in things over the last ten years, or her showing up in shows and movies like Boston Legal unexpectedly, was always a pleasant surprise. But her passing, while incredibly saddening, wasn't a surprise. It's like Stan Lee - with the elder abuse he was facing and the exploitation of his character, my primary reaction was to hope that his passing was peaceful and painless. Even a permanent fixture like Stan Lee only had so much time on this earth, as much as you might want him to live forever.

It was always going to be an unpleasant surprise, but at 99, her death wasn't a shock.
