Knowing death is coming is one of the worst things in the world. Ignorance is bliss suits perfectly in this case.
I very, very strongly disagree. I lost one of my birds back in August and it was extremely sudden. He went from flying around, normal, with the others, to seeming slightly off, to very clearly unwell, to dead, within the space of about half a fucking hour. One of the things that gets me the most is that I had basically no warning of this, and that his last minutes alive were sitting in a near-empty cage in the back of the car as I raced to the vets (unsuccessfully as he died on the way); had this been a situation where I knew, I could've given him an extra special last few days, or at the very fucking least been there holding him instead of driving the car.

It's easy to think that way when you haven't had to deal with a very sudden, unexpected death. It's a very different picture once you have, trust me.
