No matter how one looks at it the price of purchasing a $1k-$3k beater and paying liability insurance kills every competitor. If the car lasts you 2 years for example, if you leased or had a car payment and insurance payment of $300 a month, which is seriously low, you'd spend $7,200 in 2 years on it. The beater car pays for itself in one year. And pays for a quarter years rent the second year AND you can sell it whenever you want because you own it. I could not imagine being so dense that you purchase a new car or lease one given these circumstances.

This sounds like a good idea until your maintenance costs on beater double the price which actually just happened to me and I bit the bullet and got a decent used car.
