Yeah, that's the convenient thing about third-degree burns. Within the worst part of the burn itself, there aren't many nerves left to cause pain. The periphery tends to be excruciating, where the nerves are still intact enough to be doing the neurochemical equivalent of screaming "OH DEAR GOD WHY," but if 98% of his body is burned, there isn't actually going to be all that much periphery left.

The less convenient thing is that he'll probably never regain full sensation and will spend the rest of his life in considerable pain from the nerves that have recovered, as well as struggling to thermoregulate and being at severe hypo/hyperthermia risk pretty much all the time. Systemic burns suck. He's likely to be very handsomely compensated, where it was a workplace injury, but that's not going to amount to much comfort.
