Personally? I don't believe in an afterlife. I think once we die, we cease to exist.

The way my younger self would look at it is that it would be like seeing total darkness for the rest of time. You can't move, can't scream, can't do anything. Whatever "you" are, any fate it experiences is a total absence of feeling until time itself stops, which it won't.

Nowadays, my take is that there is no eternity where any and all outside stimulation is removed, because that implies that you still exist to experience that eternity devoid of outside stimuli. You don't see darkness when you die. Darkness doesn't exist for you - or in this case, you don't exist for darkness to affect. You end - a body remains, and whatever effect you had on other people carries on, but You? You become nothing. When you die, there's nothing left of you to even comprehend the gravity of that.

Take whatever you thought about death, and erase any thought process or inner monologue you have until there's no trace of it left. Until there's no word you can read or hear, until you realise that you're not viewing pitch black, you're experiencing the complete and utter lack of sight because there's nothing left to experience it. That's death, for everyone.
