But, in a general sense, all humor is by definition offense. Humor is a defense mechanism for what offends our sensibilities. You laugh at a dog in a skirt because a dog's not supposed to wear a skirt. You laugh at slapstick because you have compassion for the victim. You laugh at an awkward conversation because you imagine how bad you'd feel in that situation.
