At least you differentiate between funny and 'funny' so as not to create a paradox, I wouldn't disagree with that, but the point still stands that even if one leans onto the crutch of offensive comedy with all their being and absolutely can't make someone laugh without it they are not 'not funny' they're just perhaps less talented than a comedian with a broader repertoire. The way you word it actually makes more sense, the implication of the first 'funny' is that nobody is laughing which solves my only gripe with this topic...


There are plenty of comedians who are hilarious without punching down. I think the argument is against any comedian who complains that they can't do any material without being offensive. I think we're on the same page here
