Indoor roaches =/= outdoor roaches. Also, there's dozens upon dozens of species of roaches, yet most people treat cockroaches as one single insect.

Outdoor roach species are typically the large ones, or the ones that fly around. They don't infest buildings. With a few exceptions, them getting into your house is harmless, like getting a moth in your house, no big deal.

Indoor roach species are almost always German or brown-banded cockroaches, which are generally smaller and the nasty ones that infest buildings and spread germs.
While a lot of cruddy buildings have them, you don't necessarily get them from being unclean. Any home can get roaches, and they're generally transported from place to place via boxes or luggage. You don't just randomly get them from outside since they don't do well at reproducing in the great outdoors. They live almost exclusively in buildings where they're protected.

@TC, just buy glue traps. They're usually enough unless you have a legitimate infestation. If not, call your local pest control company
