This is a complex issue. On one hand, you have a stern father type who may have an intricate physical relationship with his son. Some people just mutually agree to settle certain disputes with physicality. That isnt always healthy. I wont say whether it is or isnt often healthy to whichever group of people at whatever time.

On the other hand... you have blatant abuse & everything in between, and also lots of misguided efforts at punishment
or corrective action, and sometimes that can decolve into abuse one way or another, either because it fails & the person gets angry (either party) and lashes out, or what happens. The end result does tend to be the same. Bad tends to get worse with individuals, and good tends to get better as people settle down, but I do think society as a whole has gotten a whole hell of a lot better with age.
