It's not. It's not nearly as harmful to you as it is to birds, but the fumes from PTFE ("Teflon" is one brand name for PTFE) are harmful to anything.

However, it will generally only release said fumes if overheated or damaged. The problem being that those aren't all that hard to accidentally do.
