Topic | Is being a narcissist a mental disorder now? |
MrMallard 08/29/21 5:44:37 AM #7: | There is a medical condition known as narcissistic personality disorder. There's a certain threshold and a set of conditions that NPD sufferers have - I wouldn't say it's as widespread as depression or anxiety or anything like that, but it does exist. It's more than entitled people reaching into tip jars and spitting at wait staff, or just "being selfish". It's stuff like delusions of grandeur, behavior in the style of Dunning-Kreuger syndrome where someone thinks they're smarter than the average person, and believing that theyre "worthy" of certain social privileges such as gatekeeping. A clinical narcissist isn't just "a selfish person", the same way a depressed person isn't "just a little bit blue" - and yet we might call selfish people narcissistic and vain, and we might say that someone who's a bit blue is depressed. Culturally, both terms are relevant to those types of people, even if they don't meet the clinical definition of those terms. But there is a definable difference between what we see as narcissistic behavior culturally, and what a clinical narcissist is. --- But I don't have to make this mistake, and I don't have to stay this way.
