A few years back I got a really bad bacterial infection that caused my right lung to be compressed to 10% of its normal size. I was in excruciating pain for almost a week because of gross incompetence on the part of the hospital ER. For a week I couldn't sleep and I barely ate anything. I finally found a doctor who would actually look at the X-rays and I was scheduled for surgery first thing the next morning.

The last thing I can remember was meeting with the anesthesiologist. He tried to put in a spinal block but it didn't work. I don't remember anything at all after that. I suspect I must have passed out.

The next thing I remember was waking up in a hospital bed, the worst of the pain was gone, I was covered in tubes and wires, and I was incredibly thirsty. They wouldn't let me drink anything, but they did let my spouse feed me ice chips.
