The killer policeman, Ottermole, is actually from a Thomas Burke story called "The Hands of Mr. Ottermole." I've never read it, but I had to look it up since I assumed it was a reference to something! John Clay is a Holmes reference to the story called "The Red-Headed League," although he is a criminal, not a policeman. His accomplice went by the alias Duncan Ross, for the record. --- ...
