We grew up looking at Homer--this bald, beer-guzzling fat guy with a wife and kids--and saw him as someone deep into his adulthood -- not exactly old, but not particularly young either. Even as 20-somethings, we saw characters like Homer as being comfortably older than us; we were young and full of life while folks in his age group were more world-weary and settled-down.
