EC can't help the fact that they wrote themselves into a corner and needed a literal DEM to save the day in the end and I suppose you could argue that's more the fault of ME1 and ME2 for making the threat that insurmountable but still, it also can't solve that it just rejects some of the longest running themes of the series until that point and you're forced to comply with that rejection (or with EC, choose Refuse which is basically the Bad End and the game doesn't hide that it thinks that.)
