They likely meant quarter diameter of the moon but even that was wrong since that would mean the ship by itself could cover half of the east coast of the USA and it obviously wasn't that big.

Edit: also blowing it up would result in more human death than the weapon it fired.

The mothership would be the thing that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum go to and blow up in space, not any of the ships that destroy landmarks on earth.
