government has failed the people of BC in many senses. I would imagine the majority of the deaths due to the heat are seniors who are crammed into aging retirement homes with nickle and dime management who would rather risk death than invest in an AC. The abhorrent state of retirement homes was an issue during the first wave of COVID as well. There is no way any sensible government should be allowing homes for senior citizens to be run that way. Many generations of government have failed in that regards.

I was also shocked by the sparsity of municipal or province run cooling stations. I know many were only open from like 1 pm to 6 pm when the heat was awful before and after. Libraries and community centres etc were only allowing timed drop in. Many times the organization were outsourced to charities or volunteer groups who performed admirably, but this was a fucking emergency situation and the different levels of government sat on their asses.

Also BC ambulance services is a chaotic shitshow and they were overwhelmed. Some of the stories out there from the last weekend are horrific, stuff like someone being told they have a better chance of getting themselves to a hospital during a health emergency than an ambulance coming by. I read a story of one guy who made his way to a fire station because the ambulance would have taken too long and died literally on the pavement outside.

And to top it off our premier said the day after that fatalities are "a part of life". I generally support the party in power right now but IMO heads need to roll for this atrocity.
