As for fighting multiple enemies, yeah, that's often unwise. There are points along the road where you can be ambushed by 2-3 heavily armored bandits, at which point it's better to run. It doesn't help that the game's archery (which actually is decent against armored enemies) is rather unwieldly and slow. Of course, if you can get onto a roof out of sword range -- which is possible in some areas -- you can just pick off those bastards.

Since I suck at archery, i often spread the enemies a part by running and having them follow me and then kill fight them one at a time that way. I often end up fighting one guy while another is trying to shoot arrows at me.
