Aside from that gameplay/story segregation is a thing for a reason; I was thinking more about things like the "you are here" indicator, custom markers, etc - and for that matter, having to specifically buy a "base" map for each area before you can fill in the rest (which in turn requires a visit to a save point) seems a bit awkward too, compared to "if you've been there, you can see it on your map" like most other games do.
I think Hollow Knight illustrated to me that games don't necessarily need to do that though. It's just something we've grown so accustomed to in Metroidvanias. But obviously they chose to be different for thematic purposes. They wanted to add a bit more depth to the map salesman than just "buy map to fill out area". I think the map is laid out well enough that it never gets too convoluted.
