Why after all the horror stories about what chimps have done to humans would this idiot keep one as a pet? One bad day is all it takes for it to kill somebody.

To be fair, they'd owned theirs *before* a lot of the more high profile incidents so they could have thought theirs was somehow different. Or they might have had it since it was a child. I don't know the backstory, other than the fact they'd owned him for 17 years so it's very likely that they'd had him for nearly all of his life (although male chimps live around 32 years in captivity, so it's not outside the realm of possibility he was somewhere else first)
