For many of them, their roots lie in Scotland and Northern England, not Ireland.

After England conquered Ireland, they started establishing plantations as a means of exerting greater control and suppressing the local culture. This was particularly done in Ulster, which was considered the most 'Irish' of the provinces. English-speaking Protestant loyalists were brought in to settle on confiscated land.

Now, hundreds of years later, you have a cultural divide.
