Yeah but Columbus was the guy who found it - in regards to the rest of the world learning that it also existed. The Vikings getting there first didn't really matter because as far as anyone was aware, Columbus "discovered" it.

And yeah, someone else would've found it and basically the same stuff probably would've happened, but Columbus did. That's not to say he deserves a holiday or anything, but he does get credit for doing it.
