I agree. I knew we would be dealing with family drama since it was a CW show after all but it's actually been done really well.

The problems they are dealing with feel very real and relatable. It's basically "how would Superman fare as a father" combined with "how does a superhero develop their powers while going through puberty". Both are concepts that are taking their time to fully flesh out, which I think makes for some rich story-telling and makes you care about the characters.

For example, the super-hearing plotline has been fascinating. Most superhero properties have that be resolved in a scene or two after a comedic mishap happens, but this episode did a great job of showing that it's tough to learn something new and requires practice. I felt for the kid and couldn't imagine being in his shoes. It's easy to see why superpowers are more a burden to him than a gift.

Weirdly enough, there are some action bits where I'm just waiting to get back to the drama bits as the action bits are more of the same we are used to. Though the latest episode has definitely been great. The climax had me pumped.
